For nearly 40 years, Kind Space has been more than just Ottawa's premier 2SLGBTQIA+ community centre, it's been a beacon of hope, support, and connection for thousands.

A legacy of support and innovation

Originally established as Pink Triangle Services in 1984, Kind Space emerged from a frontline need for dedicated charitable services within Ottawa's 2SLGBTQIA+ community. "The organization was created as a hub for support, health, and educational programming," explains Carling Miller, Executive Director, Kind Space. This innovative approach made them one of Canada's first 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations to achieve charitable status, setting a precedent for similar organizations nationwide.

Building a comprehensive community resource

Today, Kind Space operates as a vibrant community centre offering an impressive array of programs and services. "Every service we offer is completely free," emphasizes Carling. Their holistic approach to community support includes:

  • Peer Support Programs: regular group sessions providing safe spaces for connection and growth
  • Social Initiatives: from karaoke nights to board game gatherings, building community through shared interests
  • Practical Support Services: including their Trans ID clinic, food cupboard, and clothing bank
  • Educational Resources: featuring a lending library and resource navigation assistance

Making a measurable impact

With nearly 5,000 visits in 2024 and over 1,200 first-time visitors, they're continuously expanding their reach while maintaining intimate, community-focused support.

The organization's Trans ID Clinic is helping community members navigate name and gender marker changes and removing financial barriers to authentic identity documentation.

Partnership Built on Shared Values

When choosing a financial institution, Kind Space sought a partner whose values aligned with their mission of community support and inclusion. "We wanted a financial institution that is most aligned with our values as an organization," Carling shared. As an Alterna member for over 8 years, this alignment with Alterna Savings has  yielded tangible benefits for the community. As a member, they learned about Alterna's Community Granting Program, applied and received a $1,000 grant supporting the Trans ID Clinic. "We really appreciated Alterna's recognition of the need in our community, the work our team does, and their support," said Carling.

Looking Forward: Continuing the Legacy of Support

Kind Space’s partnership with Alterna Savings provides a foundation for sustainable growth and impact as it continues to evolve and serve Ottawa's 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

They remain committed to its founding principles while adapting to meet emerging community needs. Through their comprehensive programming, free services, and dedicated space, Kind Space continues to build a more inclusive and supportive Ottawa for all.
