A Politically Exposed Foreign Person (PEFP) is an individual who currently holds, or has previously held, one of the offices or positions referred to below on behalf of a foreign state:

• the head of state or head of government;
• member of the executive council of government or member of a legislature;
• deputy minister or equivalent rank;
• ambassador, or attaché or counsellor of an ambassador;
• a military officer with a rank of general or above;
• president of a state-owned company or a state-owned bank;
• head of a government agency;
• judge of a supreme court, constitutional court or other courts of last resort; or
• leader or president of a political party represented in a legislature.

A Politically Exposed Domestic Person (PEDP) is an individual who currently holds, or has previously held within the last five (5) years, one of the offices or positions referred to below on behalf of the Canadian federal government, a Canadian provincial government or a Canadian municipal government:

• the governor-general, lieutenant governor or head of government;
• member of the Senate or House of Commons or member of a legislature;
• deputy minister or equivalent rank;
• ambassador, or attaché or counsellor of an ambassador;
• a military officer with a rank of general or above;
• president of a corporation that is wholly owned directly by Her Majesty in right of Canada or a province;
• head of a government agency;
• judge of an appellate court in a province, the Federal Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court of Canada;
• leader or president of a political party represented in a legislature;
• holder of any prescribed office or position; or
• mayor

A Head of an International Organization (HIO) is an individual who currently holds, or has previously held within the last five (5) years, the specific office or position of head of an international organization, where the international organization was established by the governments of more than one member country, has activities in several countries, and is bound by a formal agreement among member countries or is an institution established by an international organization.

A Family Member (FM) of a PEFP / PEDP / HIO is:

• their child/children (i.e. biological or adoptive);
• their spouse or common-law partner;
• their mother or father;
• their siblings (i.e. another child/children of their Mother or Father;
• the mother or father of their spouse or common-law partner; or
• their ex-spouse or common-law partner.

A Close Associate (CA) of a PEFP / PEDP / HIO is:

• their business partner(s) (i.e. individuals or entities who share beneficial ownership or control of an entity or are involved in a financial transaction(s));
• their romantic partner;
• a person serving as a member of the same board of directors;
• a person serving as a prominent member of the same political party or union;
• a person who performs charitable works closely with the PEFP / PEDP / HIO; or
• a person who is listed as joint on a policy with the PEFP / PEDP / HIO.
