Stay Safe from Scams this Fall
Cybersecurity Awareness Month is here. Your safety is our top priority. Fraud attempts are on the rise. Here’s what to watch out for to protect yourself.
Top 5 Scams this Fall:
- Phishing emails & texts: Never click suspicious links. We’ll never ask you to share details by email or text.
- Impersonation scams: Fraudsters may pretend to be family, government, or your credit union. Pause, hang up, and call back.
- Urgent phone calls: Pressure to act fast is a red flag. Verify through trusted channels.
- Calling the number on the back of your debit or credit card
- Visiting alterna.ca directly (not through a link someone gives you)
- Speaking with employees at your branch
- Calling the Alterna Contact Centre at 1.877.560.0100
- Fake investments: Beware of unusually high-return GIC or crypto offers. Check with us directly. Call the number on your card, visit a branch, or go to alterna.ca/security.
- Account takeovers: Protect yourself with strong passwords and device updates.
For Seniors & Caregivers:
- Keep your PINs secure and memorized, not written down.
- Store passwords safely in a password manager or other secure tool.
- Learn the signs of impersonation calls: urgency, secrecy, and requests for personal details are red flags.
- Check-in with your parents and grandparents about safe banking.
Reminder: We will never ask for PINs or one-time codes. If in doubt, call us or visit a branch.
