From seeking refuge in Canada to becoming a groundbreaking legal advocate, Nicola Simpson's story is a powerful testament to her unwavering determination and purposeful innovation. As the founder of Simpson Law and Mediation Chambers, she's revolutionizing access to justice while creating lasting change throughout her community.

From Refugee to Legal Pioneer

When Nicola Simpson arrived in Canada in 2010, fleeing violence and homophobia in Jamaica, she carried an unshakeable resolve to build a meaningful future. Despite facing homelessness and living in a shelter for almost two years, she remained determined to forge her own path. "Starting over wasn't just about relocating," she reflects, "it meant rebuilding my life from scratch."

Education became her foundation for change. Simpson pursued her dreams step by step, earning a diploma in paralegal studies, followed by a degree in legal studies and a Master of Arts in criminology and social justice. Her acceptance into the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law in 2018 marked a hard-won milestone – but the journey was far from over.

Persistence in the Face of Adversity
Without access to traditional financial support or a student line of credit, Simpson again faced homelessness while pursuing her law degree. Yet her resilience proved stronger than any obstacle. She completed her studies, finishing her final year at Osgoode Hall Law School, and went on to earn a Master of Laws in Dispute Resolution from the University of Missouri.

"Each challenge strengthened my resolve to create change," Simpson explains. Today, as a proud solicitor and barrister with the Law Society of Ontario, an accredited family mediator, and a notary public, she's transforming her experiences into innovative solutions for others facing barriers to justice.

Reimagining Legal Services

Simpson Law and Mediation Chambers, her virtual law firm, embodies a bold reimagining of legal services delivery. Focusing on immigration and family law, Simpson delivers trauma-informed, client-centered legal services that respond to the complex needs of marginalized communities.

"My mission is to help marginalized and vulnerable people – those who often feel overlooked – navigate the legal system," Simpson shares. Her approach combines professional excellence with deep empathy, particularly in cases that demand both legal expertise and cultural understanding.

Community Impact and Digital Outreach
Simpson's impact transcends her legal practice. Through social media platforms like TikTok, she conducts live streams offering guidance and resources to people seeking clarity in immigration and legal matters. These digital outreach efforts serve as vital lifelines for individuals facing uncertain circumstances.

Her commitment to community empowerment is evident in every aspect of her work. "While I deeply value and celebrate Black History Month," she notes, "I believe that recognition and impact cannot be confined to February." Throughout the year, she provides free consultations, leads workshops and panels, and actively creates pathways for growth and success within the Black community.

Partnership for Progress
When traditional funding sources weren't accessible, Simpson found a partner who recognized her potential. Alterna's Microfinance Program provided financial support along with the understanding and guidance needed to transform her vision into reality. This partnership enabled Simpson to build the technological infrastructure and digital presence necessary to serve clients effectively, regardless of their location.

Looking Forward
Today, Simpson's story stands as a powerful testament that with determination, support, and purpose, barriers can become bridges to new possibilities. Her virtual law firm isn't just a business – it's a beacon of innovation and inclusion for those who might otherwise feel the legal system is beyond their reach.

"Creating a safe and accessible space for my clients was worth every challenge I faced," Simpson reflects. Through her innovative approach to legal services and unwavering commitment to justice, she's not just practicing law, she's transforming lives.
