30 Years of Connection: LGBT YouthLine's Journey of Youth Supporting Youth

LGBT YouthLine, a 30+ year old, youth-led organization continues to fulfill its founding vision: ensuring no young person questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity feels isolated. In 2024 alone, their dedicated team supported nearly 3,000 youth through their confidential HelpLine services.

A vision born through youth leadership

LGBT YouthLine's story began in May 1993, when a group of young activists recognized a critical gap in support for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, particularly individuals in rural and remote parts of Ontario. "At the time, there was no accessible, youth-focused, Ontario-wide service," explains Lauren Pragg, Executive Director, LGBT YouthLine. These visionary youth imagined a toll-free peer support phone line that would transcend geographic barriers, connecting and supporting young people across the province.

Creating spaces for connection and growth

Today, YouthLine operates a comprehensive peer support network that virtually meets youth where they are. Their confidential HelpLine, available Sunday through Friday from 4:00 to 9:30 p.m. EST, offers support through multiple channels, including email, text, and chat. What makes their approach unique is their commitment to peer-led support—all volunteers are aged 16 to 29 and bring diverse 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and lived experiences to their roles.

The organization's dedication to quality support is evident in its rigorous 13-week volunteer training program. "This training ensures youth reaching out receive informed, affirming support from peers with shared lived experiences," explains Lauren. The program grounds volunteers in anti-oppression, active listening, harm reduction, and trauma-informed care principles.

Beyond the help line: creating lasting impact

YouthLine's impact extends far beyond individual support calls. Their northern, rural, and remote Indigenous outreach program builds vital connections with Indigenous youth, strengthening local supports and creating leadership opportunities within their communities. They maintain a comprehensive, province-wide referral database connecting youth with crucial identity-affirming organizations and services in their local areas.

The organization's commitment to youth leadership shines through initiatives like their YouthOrganize program. In 2024, this program engaged 36 youth in Peel and Halton regions to create "Coming Home," an anthology exploring identity, home, and resilience from the perspective of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.

A key financial partnership

As an Alterna member for nearly 8.5 years, LGBT YouthLine made a conscious choice to switch its banking to Alterna Savings from one of the five chartered banks. "Alterna has a reputation among non-profit organizations," Lauren shared, "and the credit union model aligns with YouthLine's values." They found value in the responsive business team at the Bay Street branch and the cost-effective e-transfer services that help maintain their operational efficiency.

Looking forward: the next chapter of support

As LGBT YouthLine continues to evolve and respond to community needs. Through its comprehensive programming, dedicated volunteer network, and commitment to accessibility, YouthLine exemplifies how youth-led initiatives can create lasting, meaningful change in our communities, and remains a critical lifeline for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth across Ontario.

Their recommendation of Alterna to other community organizations speaks to the importance of strong partnerships in sustaining vital community services. As they move forward, LGBT YouthLine's dedication to peer support, youth leadership, and community building continues to make Ontario a more supportive and inclusive place for all young people.
